Lesson timetable: 17:00 - 20:00 (total of 21 hours)
In this seminar we will study the ney and its techniques, the way we encounter them in classical Ottoman music.
We will analyse and study compositions in various makams.
The seminar will be open to all levels, as well as to other instruments that can play the microintervals of this music and are interested in classical Ottoman music and the makam modal system.

* This lesson will be taught primarily in Greek. Terminology will be explained in other languages as well, according to the teacher’s disposal.

Nikos Paraoulakis was born in Crete in 1977.
In 1995 he got installed in Athens in order to follow his musical studies.
He studied and got a degree in higher music theoretics (harmony and counterpoint), with Panagiotis Adam, Iosif Papadatos and Vassilis Foster, in classical guitar with Thanassis Koumenteris and jazz guitar with Giotis Samaras.
Since 2000 his studies have focused on eastern music and the greek musical tradition.
He was taught the ney by Harris Lambrakis and Ömer Erdoğdular.
He has cooperated with many important greek and foreign musicians and composers in live concerts and recordings (Eleni Karaindrou, Sokratis Malamas, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Antonis Apergis, Maria Farantouri, Zülfü Livaneli, Orfeas Peridis, Haid Yazdjian, Marta Sebestyen, Karine Polwart, Charis Alexiou, Eleni Vitali, Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Loudovikos ton Anogeion, Vasilis Skoulas, Kitrina Podilata, Psarantonis, Nikos Kypourgos a.o.)
During 2005 – 2006 he taught the ney in TEI of Epirus (department of traditional and folk music) in Arta.
In 2014 he released a cd with the title : “From light to darkness”, which he composed, instrumented, produced and recorded, Dimitris Papacharalampous wrote the lyrics and the singing performers were Alkinoos Ioannidis, Manolis Lidakis, Apostolos Rizos, Marina Dakanali, Maria Koti, Nikos Venetakis, Maria Fasoulaki, Panos Papaioanou, Zoi Vergaki (MLK publishing)
Today he is an active member of the music group Polis Ensemble with whom they released in 2019 their first album with their own compositions entitled “Polis Ensemble” and in 2021 their second album entitled “Sound Greek”, a tribute to the work of classical greek composers from the 13th to the 20th century. In 2023 they released their third album with 16 christmas carols and instrumental compositions from all around Greece.
He recorded the ney for the work “Tous des oiseaux”, by Eleni Karaindrou, which was released by ecm records in 2019.
In 2022 he released his second personal album entitled “En Route”, an album that consists of 10 instrumental compositions, which he composed, instrumented, recorded and produced himself. At the same time he founded the music group Nikos Paraoulakis & “En Route” project, with whom he participates in concerts, performing the album “En Route” and new, not yet released compositions.
He participates in recordings, concerts and seminars in Greece and abroad.
